Reflection for October 1, 2026

Sent as Lambs

Reflection on Luke 10:1-12

In this Gospel, Jesus does not wait for the crowds to come to Him; He sends His disciples out to them. He appoints seventy-two—a number symbolizing the nations of the world—to go ahead of Him, preparing the way for His coming. This is the foundational model of the Church's mission: we are not a people who simply wait, but a people who are sent.

The Lord’s instructions are striking and deeply counter-cultural. He tells them to travel without money, without a bag, without sandals. This radical poverty is not an end in itself; it is a means to radical trust. By stripping away every earthly support, Jesus ensures that the disciples’ only security is in the providence of God. Their power is not in their resources, but in the message they carry: "The Kingdom of God is at hand."

They are sent as "lambs among wolves." This is a sobering image. The mission of the Church is not one of worldly conquest or coercion. It is a mission of vulnerability, of peace, and of self-giving love. The peace they are to offer is not a fragile truce, but the deep shalom of God—a wholeness and reconciliation that only He can give. When that peace is rejected, the disciples are not to retaliate, but to move on, leaving the judgment to God.

As Catholics, we are all commissioned by our Baptism and Confirmation to be these messengers. We are sent into our own homes, workplaces, and communities. Our primary task is not to argue people into the faith, but to live in such a way that the Kingdom is made present. Like the seventy-two, we are called to bring healing, to offer peace, and to proclaim, by our words and deeds, that Jesus Christ is near. The harvest is still plentiful, and the Lord of the harvest is still calling. Let us pray for the grace to be generous laborers, trusting not in our own strength, but in the One who sends us.
