Reflection for April 15, 2026

The Heart of the Gospel

Perhaps no words in Scripture are more beloved or more famous than John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” This single verse is often called the "Gospel in miniature." It sums up the entire story of salvation: a loving God, a lost world, a supreme gift, and an invitation to eternal life.

But Jesus does not stop there. In the verses that follow (John 3:17-21), He clarifies a crucial point. The Son was not sent to condemn the world, but to save it. Yet condemnation remains a real possibility—not because God is eager to punish, but because many prefer darkness to light.

As Catholics, we recognize that we are saved by grace through faith, but that faith must be alive and active. To “believe” in John’s Gospel means more than intellectual assent; it means walking in the light of Christ, especially through the Sacraments and obedience to His commandments. The “light” has come into the world—most fully in the Eucharist, the Real Presence of Jesus. To reject that light is to self-exile from God’s love.

Today, let us not simply admire John 3:16 as a famous line. Let us live it. When we feel ashamed of our sins, remember: Jesus came not to condemn you, but to save you. Step out of the shadows and into His mercy. For everyone who lives in the truth comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.
