Reflection for April 28, 2026

The Shepherd’s Grip

In John 10:22-30, we find Jesus walking in the Temple portico during the Feast of the Dedication (Hanukkah). It is winter, a season of cold, darkness, and fading light. The Jews surround Him, demanding clarity: “If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

Their problem is not a lack of evidence; it is a lack of listening. Jesus responds, “I told you, but you do not believe.” True belief, He explains, is not merely intellectual assent but the response of a sheep who recognizes the Shepherd’s voice.

Then comes the heart of the Gospel promise. Jesus declares that He gives His sheep eternal life, and “they shall never perish.” Notice the double grip of salvation: “No one will snatch them out of my hand... My Father... is greater than all, and no one can snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

In winter’s chill, fear often whispers that we might wander too far, fall too hard, or become lost in the dark. But this passage reveals that our security rests not on the strength of our grip on God, but on the strength of His grip on us. The Father and the Son hold us with a single, divine grasp.

Are you surrounded by doubt or confusion? Do you long for a “plain” answer to life’s trials? Listen quietly for the Shepherd’s voice in Scripture and the Church. Then rest. Your salvation does not depend on your perfect following, but on His perfect holding. In the Father and the Son, you are held forever.
