Reflection for April 22, 2026

“I Am the Bread of Life”

In John 6:35, Jesus makes a stunning declaration: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

These words come just after the miracle of the loaves and fishes, when the crowd was looking for another free meal. Jesus invites them—and us—to look deeper. Our deepest hunger is not for bread that perishes, but for the love, truth, and life that only He can give.

Notice the tender intimacy in verse 37: “Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me.” How consoling this is for the Catholic heart! No matter our sins, failures, or doubts, Jesus never turns us away. He is not a reluctant Savior but a welcoming one.

Verse 38 reveals His perfect obedience: “I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.” And what is the Father’s will? That “I should not lose anything of what he gave me” (v. 39). Here we see the heart of salvation: Jesus is the Good Shepherd who protects and preserves His flock. For Catholics, this echoes the gift of the Eucharist—the Bread of Life—which He gives to sustain us on the journey to eternal life.

Finally, verse 40 gives us the mission: “Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”

Reflection question: Do I come to Jesus in the Eucharist hungry for more than worldly satisfaction? Do I trust that He will never reject me, no matter how unworthy I feel?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Bread of Life, satisfy the deep hunger in my soul. Help me to come to You without fear, to believe in You without reserve, and to live in the hope of the Resurrection. Amen.
